Tokay Geckos For Sale In The Philippines

The current local market price for a Tokay gecko above 300 grams is at least P200,000.. What price it fetches abroad is anybody's guess.

A kampung folk who has a marketable sized Tokay gecko for sale will not have to wait long for serious buyers to make him an offer.

In light of its high market value, catching and trading in Tokay geckos have become a lucrative side business especially for villagers.

Residents in northern towns of Luzon have seen the gecko business grow into a cottage industry after news reports revealed that overseas buyers are willing to pay up to P1 million for each reptile.

As the supply is getting scarce in the Philippines, agents have started to head towards Thailand to source for fresh supplies. Just drive into border towns and you can easily sport wildlife trappers and agents advertising the Tokay gecko for sale.

While numerous gecko species are sold as pets at nominal prices, the highly prized specie in demand for its medicinal value is the Tokay gecko.

Tokay geckos are in high demand by the traditional medicine industry abroad as it is believed that the reptile’s tongue can cure AIDS. Some believe that its meat is also an aphrodisiac while its blood and bile suppresses tumors in cancer patients.

Despite the on going rumours of the medicinal cures of the gecko, WHO, was quoted in one news report saying that there is currently no scientific evidence to verify the claims.

Villagers who are involved in this business say that although the Tokay gecko is difficult to find and capture, those who manage to find this illusive reptile can expect to sell it at a lucrative price while the current gecko market is still sizzling.

As buyers are only interested in Tokay geckos weighing 300 grams and above, those possessing smaller Tokay geckos would rear the reptiles hoping to sell them once their weight exceeds 300 grams. Although Tokay geckos usually feed on insects such as crickets, cockroaches and grasshoppers, the Tokay geckos in captivity are also fed chicken liver to speed up its growth process.

The Tokay gecko (also known as the Gekko gecko) is a nocturnal arboreal gecko whose native habitat is the rain-forest trees and cliffs. The Tokay gecko is commonly found in northeast India and Bangladesh, throughout Southeast Asia and western New Guinea.

The typical current prices for Tokay geckos are as follows:

300 grams - 399 grams = P250,000 - P350,000
400 grams - 499 grams = P800,000 - P1,200,000
500 grams - 599 grams = P2,000,000 - P4,000,000
600 grams - 799 grams = P5,000,000 - P7,000,000
800 grams - 999 grams = P8,000,000 - P9,800,000
Above 1000 grams approximately 10 million.

At the moment there is no indication whether the Tokay gecko business will continue to grow as an industry or will fizzle out just as the Flowerhornornamental fish business did a few years ago. For those who remember, during the peak of the Flowerhorn craze, mature cichlids were sold for up to hundreds of thousands of Pesos.

How To Detect Fake Peso Bills (Philippine Peso Bills)

How to determine if your peso bill is fake or not:

(Information were provided by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas)

Paper
The paper feels rough when fingers are run through it. Genuine peso bills also do not glow under ultraviolet light.
Security Fibers
Visible red and blue fibers are embedded and scattered at random on both surfaces of a genuine bill. These can also be picked off easily by using any pointed instrument.
Color
Each peso note has a predominant color:
  • 1,000-piso – Blue
  • 500-piso – Yellow
  • 200-piso – Green
  • 100-piso – Mauve
  • 50-piso – Red
  • 20-piso – Orange
(a) Watermark
The watermark is the silhouette of the portrait on the face of the note. When viewed against the light, details of the light and shadow effect of the watermark can be seen. The contours of the watermarked portrait can also be felt by running the fingers over the design.
(b) Embedded Security Thread
This is a special thread vertically embedded off center of the peso note. This is easily seen when the bill is viewed against the light. It appears as a broken line for Php 5, Php 10 and Php 20 bills and a straight line for Php 50, Php 100, Php 200, Php 500 and Php 1,000 bills.
(c) Windowed Security Thread
This is a narrow thread located vertically like stitches on the note. It has a cleartext of the numerical value in repeated sequence. Depending on the angle view, it changes in color from magenta to green and vice-versa.
(d) Iridescent Band
The Iridescent Band is a glistening gold vertical stripe on the side of a note with the numerical value printed on it.
(e) Portrait
The portraits on the notes appear life-like especially since the eyes seem to “sparkle.” Shadings are formed by the fine lines that give the portrait a characteristic facial expression which is difficult to replicate.
(f) Serial Number
The Serial Number is composed of 1 or 2 prefix letters and 6 or 7 digits. It is printed with uniform size and thickness, evenly spaced, and well-aligned. It also glows under ultraviolet light.
(g) Background / Lacework Design
The background designs are made up of multicolored and well defined lines. The lacework designs are composed of web-crisscrossing lines which are continuous and traceable even at the intersection.
(h) Vignette
The lines and dashes of the vignette are fine, distinct, and sharp. The varying color tone gives a vivid look to the picture making it “stand out” of the paper.
(i) Value Panel
These are the numerals found at the four corners of the back and front surfaces of the note. They denote the denomination of the bill.
(j) Fluorescent Printing
An invisible numerical value on the face of the note that glows under ultraviolet light.
(k) Microprinting
These are minute and finely printed — but clearly printed and readable — words “Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas” or “Central Bank of the Philippines” located at the face or back of the note.
(l) Concealed Value
Php 500 notes have a Concealed Value located at the lower left corner on the front side of the note recognizable when the note is held at eye level.
(m) Optically Variable Ink
Php 1,000 notes have Optically Variable Ink that changes color from green to blue and vice-versa when the note is viewed in different angles.

And that's all! Now that you know all these, we hope you won’t be a victim of fake money!

Pigar-Pigar in Dagupan City

A picture of pigar-pigar served in Galvan Street, Dagupan City

During my college days, my friends and I go to Galvan Street in Dagupan City every month just to eat Pigar-pigar for our dinner. Pigar-pigar is one of the most in-demand food in Dagupan City, and people from nearby towns visit Dagupan City just for this.

Pigar-pigar is a thinly sliced carabao's meat or cow's meat (beef) which are seasoned purely with salt and pepper. And cooked deep-fry. And depending on the costumers, they may put some add-ons to this recipe like, onion rings, sliced cabbage, cauliflower and others.

The Street of Pigar-pigar

When I was young, my father used to eat Pigar-pigar in Galvan Street, Dagupan City. He often brings me there, but I never have the guts to taste it, not knowing that it really taste so good. One more thing is that Pigar-pigar doesn't sound good. Yet I was wondering why do people still love this pigar-pigar. And so during my college days, my classmates invited me to eat dinner in Galvan Street. And there, finally I have no choice but to eat pigar-pigar for dinner. And I was expecting that it would be a problem for me later on thinking that I might not like the taste of pigar-pigar. Unexpectedly, it just turned out to be so good. I enjoyed eating pigar-pigar. And I ask my friends to go to Galvan at least once a month to eat pigar-pigar for dinner.
